Giant Zittau Onion VON-4580

Limited Supply.

Heirloom from 1885.

A yellow onion with flattened shape and excellent flavor.

The 4-5" bulbs are beautiful-flattened with an almost silky, golden-brown skin, and delicious.
Spring or autumn sowing. Day-length neutral. Does not flourish in clay. Very productive. BOTANICAL NAME: Allium cepa

Start seeds in flats early in the season at least 2 months before last frost. Transplant seedlings 4" apart after hard frosts are over. Will grow best in a fairly rich, light loam with plenty of organic matter (compost, etc). Soil must be kept moist and keep well-weeded. This onion grows to a large size. Matures in about 14-17 weeks. When tops start to yellow, cease watering. Harvest when tops are dead, and cure in a shady airy place for 2 weeks before storing. Great producer. Great keeper

We have been a big fan of this variety for several years. Last years crop came in at four bushels. Were in mid-April now and they are still doing great in storage and well process the remainder soon and freeze them.
