Hungarian Pink Winter...
This old European heirloom
is one of the most beautiful vegetables we've seen.
Round green heads, larger and firmer than most butterheads, brushed with pink. Easy to grow, good flavor, cold-hardy. In short supply this year.
BOTANICAL NAME: Lactuca sativa
GROWING INSTRUCTIONS: Start in flats or direct seed. Cold frames extend season. Best flavor if growth is fast, ensure soil has adequate nitrogen, aeration, water, lime. In hot climates plant under taller crops, or locate a spot with morning sun only. Succession-sow every three weeks. Seed that has been stored over 80 degrees may need a week in the fridge before planting to ensure germination.
