Alan Chadwick's Rodan...
Easy to grow, and delicious;
our trial gardeners said that in 15 years of gardening, they had never grown a better tasting, more bolt-resistant lettuce.
Rodan was saved from the brink of extinction when we found one packet from 1998 that still contained viable seed. Deep-green, nutritious leaves are sweet and buttery with a very crunchy, juicy midrib.
Almost a romaine, but sweeter and easier to grow. Perfect baby leaves, or mature heads.
Unusual and choice. Give this afternoon shade.
BOTANICAL NAME: Lactuca sativa
GROWING INSTRUCTIONS: Start in flats or direct seed. Cold frames extend season. Best flavor if growth is fast: ensure soil has adequate nitrogen, aeration, water, lime. In hot climates use shade cloth mid-day to keep plants cool, plant under taller crops, or locate in a spot with morning sun only. Succesion-sow every 3 weeks. Seeds that has been stored at temperatures over 80 degrees may need a week in the fridge before planting to ensure germination.
