with great flavor all summer. OSSI-pledged variety, bred by Don Tipping. Since we ran out of this lettuce in 2014, customers have been calling and asking for it. Quan Yin is back! The great big, heavy heads of juicy tender green leaves have earned this lettuce a following at farmer's markets. Customers say it is easy to grow even in heat, and makes a nice big head with good flavor. The name comes from the Chinese goddess of abundance, and it is well-bestowed here. BOTANICAL NAME: Lactuca sativa
GROWING INSTRUCTIONS: Start in flats or direct seed. Cold frames extend season. Fertile, composted soil that is loose, not too acid,well-drained , and in good tilth with adequate nitrogen and moisture promotes fast growth for best flavor. In hot climates use shade cloth mid day to keep plants cool or plant where there is morning sun only. Plant every three weeks for continuous harvest. Seed that has been stored over 80 degrees may need a week in the fridge before planting to ensure germination. Can be cut young like leaf lettuce.
