Heirloom from 1886.

Long, tender, pure-white stems, very mild flavor.

Very cold hardy. Also known as 'Prizetaker' and 'The Lyon Prizetaker'.

Grows to a large size with mild flavor. Very high quality.

BOTANICAL NAME: Allium ampeloprasum v. porrum

GROWING INSTRUCTIONS:

Start seeds in flats up to 12 weeks before last frost. For best results, when large enough to handle, transplant into another flat. After frost, transplant seedlings outdoors 6" apart. This variety is early maturing and extremely hardy-an excellent winter vegetable. Transplant to a rich, deeply dug soil that is well fertilized. Try to keep the soil pH 6-6.8. Self-blanching, but added blanching helps-keep earthling up the plant's base to where the leaves diverge to blanch lower stem.
