The most winter-hardy kale we offer, to zone 4.
And the most resistant to flooding and soggy soils.
Has won many taste tests in spite of its tough constitution. Cut and frilled edges with white midribs, mild flavor, easy to grow. Bred by Frank Morton and crew at Gathering Together Farm.
BOTANICAL NAME: Brassica oleracea acephala
A heavy-feeder that likes fertile, fine-textured and well-prepared soil, with added compost, some nitrogen and a little lime. Start seeds in flats very early in Spring or in late Summer, allowing 6 weeks before first frost. Transplant seedlings 15" apart. If direct seeding avoid soil crusting. Keep watered. Either harvest whole plant or take larger leaves while young. Best taste comes after a few frosts.
