A very special kale,
which we carried for many years
until it became unavailable. We are so glad to have it back!
Tender and succulent leaves, with curled edges, on very vigorous 2' plants. Excellent kale raab (flower shoots) in spring.
This variety, with its great vigor, is very winter hardy, sometimes becoming almost perennial.
BOTANICAL NAME: Brassica oleracea
Start seeds in flats or pots very early in Spring or in late Summer. Transplant seedlings into a well-composted and dug bed, planting a bit deeper than in the flat. Use lime if necessary to assure adequate calcium and a PH of at least 6. Kale is very hardy, and survives winter best if mulched and protected form drying winds. Ready for harvest in early Summer or late Winter to early Spring. Matures in 8-9 weeks. Flowering stalks are particularly choice.
