Aurora Orach, Organic VGR-3825

An amazing rainbow

of bright and unusual colors really jazzes up summer salads and vegetable plates:

red, gold, green, pink, carmine, and purple.

The leaves have a shimmery radiance that you really have to see. BOTANICAL NAME: Artiplex hortensis

Start seeds in flats or pots. Transplant seedlings into sunny place on 12" centers after all chance of frost is past. Keep picking leaves from time plants are 1' tall-best flavor when plants are 18" or under. Good idea to succession-sow. Likes hot weather and does well in saline soil. Grows 2 feet tall, up to 4' in good soil. If some plants are allowed to form tall flower stalks, they provide pollen to attract the tiny flies that eat aphids in the fall. Grows itself even in north
on 08/16/12 by Laura in OR

I have grown green, gold, and red Orach for years now. Green and red varieties have reseeded themselves each year and just need thinning. Orach is not sold as a hardy plant, but I live in zone 3 to 4 and the seedlings sprout under the snow every year!
