A heirloom triple-cut
curly endive from France.
This is the feathery, finely-branched pale leaf you see in salad mix in winter. Grows like lettuce but more slowly and so is much more frost-hardy. Big heads with blanched hearts, delicious and hardy for fall and winter salads.
BOTANICAL NAME: Cichorium endiva
GROWING INSTRUCTIONS: Start in flats or direct seed. Cold frames extend season. Fertile, composted soil that is loose, not too acid, well-drained, and in good tilth with adequate nitrogen and moisture promotes fast growth for best flavor. In hot climates site plants where they will get morning sun only, like the east side of a house or to the north of taller crops. Or use shade cloth mid-day to keep plants cool. Succession-sow for continuous supply. May blanch with a box or by tying outer leaves up.
