Sweet, brittle, aromatic flesh
-a spring treat.
Blunt, finger-shaped roots 7" long with outstanding raw flavor.
Easy to grow, fast, and classic. You don't usually see Nantes carrots in the grocery store because they are too juicy and brittle for machine digging. They are a treat you need to grow for yourself.
BOTANICAL NAME: Daucus carota
Sow seed 3" apart or broadcast carefully in deep, well prepared bed for long, well-shaped roots. Avoid fresh manure or excess nitrogen which causes hairy, forked roots. Cover the seed lightly with soil. Do not allow the soil to dry out or crust (in soil that crust easily, try covering seed with sand, vermiculite, or potting mix). Germination can be slow; presoaking in warm water can help. Plant late summer for a fall crop that can be used after sweetening by frost. Keep bed weeded for best growth, and thin to at least 3" apart.
