An old favorite.
Very early, and fast growing with sweet flavor.
Compact, ball-headed Golden Acre type.
These heirloom cabbages are becoming hard to find as hybrids take over the market. Less fussy about soil and spacing than many others.
Highly recommended. We import this seed from England, where they take cabbage very seriously, and is the only US source.
BOTANICAL NAME: Brassica oleracea var. capitata
Start seeds in flats or pots. Transplant seedlings 15" apart, a little deeper than in the flats, into very well-dug and composted soil. Does not like very acidic soil, so lime if needed. Matures in 9+ weeks. If weather is very hot, cabbage benefits from some midday shade. Seems to do well in any soil, but all cabbages need plenty of nitrogen and calcium, as well as even moisture, for good growth and firm heads. Compost and manure are both good fertilizers for cabbage.
