Moth Beans, Matki Dal
(Mat Bean, Mother Bean)
Highly drought resistant, very small beans from India. The sprawling mat-forming plants do well in very hot weather (to 100-120F) and protect the soil. Small pods 1-2" long contain 4-8 tiny beans.
In India the young pods are eaten and the dry beans are used like lentils.
Very high protein (22-24%), it does well for our customers in Texas and the hot South. Smothers weeds. Will grow in shade under corn.
BOTANICAL NAME: Phaseolus aconitifolius
GROWING INSTRUCTIONS:Does well in most soils. Start seeds in flats or plant directly into beds ¼" deep and on 6" centers. Prefers having some compost and amendments added to soil before planting. Keep soil moist until seeds sprout and are established but water sparingly thereafter-very drought tolerant. Needs full sun and prefers hot weather for growth.
