Outstanding as a weed-smothering summer groundcover,
with beautifully scalloped leaves that catch dew like pearls.
Used for centuries as a women's herb.
Astringent, wound-healing, styptic. Excellent in shade, putting difficult areas under trees to use. Non-caffeine black tea substitute.
BOTANICAL NAME: Alchemilla mollis
Start seeds in flats or pots and transplant 12" for groundcover, 18" for other plantings. Very adaptable-can cope with most any climate in North America if the roots have good drainage. Takes sun or shade, but not deep dark dense shade. In drought, a mulch of stones can help condense and retain water. Leaves will die back in the fall in cold climates, and may also be sheared back any time the plant looks shabby. Harvest for tea when just starting to flower.
