Black Seed, Kalonji.
Common in Indian and Middle Eastern cooking, the peppery seeds are used to flavor naan bread.
Traditionally used for stomach problems, parasites, water retention, fever.
Modern interest focuses on use as an antihistamine. An Arab proverb says black cumin is a cure for everything except death.
BOTANICAL NAME: Nigella sativa
Sow seeds 9 inches apart directly in the ground in autumn or spring in a sunny spot (either way, it will germinate in spring). The seed germinates best in cool soil and germination is inhibited by light, so keep shaded until seedlings appear. You may pinch tip when young to promote branching, and more flowers. Flowers will give way to seedpods, which should be harvested promptly before the seeds fall to the ground. Use in cooking and on naan bread.
