White Einkorn Ancient... GWH-7531

The most ancient type of wheat

Einkorn is adapted to spring or fall planting. The grower who produces this strain for us plants in the spring.

When the 5,300 year old body of the "Icemean" was found frozen into a glacier in the Alps, grains of Einkorn were found in his belongings.

We have found a farmer who is growing this ancient variety so that we could make 1-ounce packets available to you.  Each packet 1 oz packet has approximately 500 seeds. Please note, this is different from the catalog listing, which had a typo.

We highly recommend that you read Eli Rogosa's new book Restoring Heritage Grains for first-hand instructions on growing einkorn, harvesting it in the traditional way that reduces allergens and makes it more digestible, and wonderful traditional recipes for einkorn.

Spring-planted, 2.5-3 feet tall, very rare. BOTANICAL NAME : Triticum monococcum (formerly Einkorn hornemannii)

Start in flats as soon as ground can be worked. Here in zone 6, that is in February, 3 months before our last frost date. In cold regions it may be much later, but start as early as you can. Transplant 5" apart when 2-3" high. Can also be broadcast when soil temps reach 40 degrees. Cease watering when 85% of the seed heads are golden and harvest when almost all are. Dry fully before storing. Matures in about 100-125 days. GROW BIOINTENSIVE® CULTURAL INFO: C/Matures 16-20/Harvest 0-4/Yield 4-26 grain, 12-72 dry biomass/Spacing 5" ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
