Spring-planted (February in zone 8).
Shorter variety with stiff, strong, straw to about 3 1/2' tall.
Tillers well, fat heads of grain.
Stands sturdy without lodging, low-maintenance, adaptable.
BOTANICAL NAME : X triticosecale
Sow in cool weather; fall or very early spring. Dig under when 9" talk if used as green manure. Does well in most soils not too acidic/alkaline, establishing quickly to hold soil from erosion and wind with its huge root system. If growing as a grain plant seed 5" apart & let mature over a 4-6 month period. Harvest when heads are dry and golden.
