Hungarian Blue Poppy,...
This heirloom variety
has been grown in Eastern Europe for centuries.
For producing seed, so the seedheads are high-yielding and do not shed seed when ripe like ornamental types. Yields a surprising number of blue-black seeds for breads, cakes, muffins, etc. Hungarian Blue is lower in medicinal compounds than ornamental somniferum poppy varieties, high in seed production.
BOTANICAL NAME : Papaver somniferum
GROWING INSTRUCTIONS: Needs a sunny, well-drained spot. Enjoys rocky or gravelly locations, but the underlying soil should be fertile (may side-dress with compost or balanced nutrients). Does not transplant well; sow in place or in pots, in fall if climate is mild, or very early spring. May need soil amendments. Needs light to germinate, so scatter seed on loose, raked, cultivated ground. Break or slice dry seedheads open and shake in a bag-seeds will shake out easily.
