Beautiful big plants to 5-7 feet
with both leaves and seed heads of intense deep red.
Produces large yields of white seed, excellent for grain use. (Many red-leaved varieties have black, strong-tasting seeds are primarily for eating the leaves).
BOTANICAL NAME : Amaranthus sp.
Start seeds in flats or sow 1/8 inch deep and 12" apart directly into beds after all danger of frost has passed. Keep soil moist until seedlings are established. Loves heat, and easy to grow. Harvest when seedheads mature and dry out. Can be threshed and winnowed by hand, by rubbing the heads over a sheet or tarp and wind or fan-winnowing.
