Rutabagas are an excellent nutritious 

late-season root crop that can easily be stored in pits  

or moist sand in the cellar for 3-4 months. 

Larger and hardier than the common turnip, with a richer texture. 

Though they can be harvested after a frost, their keeping quality will suffer.
