Warm soil is key

to success with summer's hot-weather crops.

Corn, beans, squash, chard should all go in around your last frost date. Melons, eggplants, okra, and tropical plants will want to go in 2 weeks later. Sow every 2 weeks, until you are 3-4 months from your fall frost date--you don't want everything to ripen at once and then be gone. Corn is especially important to sow again, or sow both early and late varieties, because it doesn't hold on the plant. But bush beans, melons, and even zucchini tend to peter out unless you have new plants coming along.

If your climate doesn't warm the soil to 70 degrees, consider a cold frame or row cover.

Warmth is especially important if the soil is very wet. Moisture makes it easier for rot to infect your seeds. And wet soil is colder than dry soil.
