Forgiving of extreme weather and poor soil.

Shorter growing season than most other grains.

2-row is used for brewing, and 6-row for cooking.

Makes a fine, mild-flavored flour, porridge, soup or pilaf.

Barley likes neutral soil. Tolerates alkaline soil.

Hulless "Naked" Barley

Hulls come off easily with hand threshing. These are all 6-row barleys, high in protein for flour and cooking. 70-seed packets of these rare barleys cover about 8 sq ft.

Regular Barley

Not the best type for growing to eat, because it must be hulled, which essentially requires machinery. However, we get requests for this from home brewers and from people who just want barley straw for killing algae in ponds. One pound bag, plants about 1000 square feet.
